In 2002 the orchestra inaugurated the Mayfestival in Wiesbaden with the same production conducted by Massimo De Bernart. The orchestra’s first overseas venture was in 2001 when it toured with the Puccini Festival’s “Madama Butterfly” to Japan’s most important opera houses in Tokyo, Kobe and Nagasaki under the baton of Stefano Ranzani, an initiative that won the Fuji Prize for the best event in the “Italy in Japan” cultural year. Protagonist of the Festival’s many tours in Europa, Asia and Latin America, the Festival Orchestra plays not only opera, but also symphonic music ranging from baroque to the contemporary, offering itself as a versatile and flexible instrument able to take on all kinds of new projects that require a multiplicity of cultural facets. Since 2000 it is principal orchestra performing Puccini’s operas at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago and during the Festival’s many opera and concert performances in Italy and abroad.

The Puccini Festival Orchestra was formed by the musicians of “Città Lirica”, a project launched in 1997 by the Regional Government of Tuscany aimed at creating a single orchestra for the opera seasons of Torre del Lago, Pisa, Leghorn and Lucca.
